MOLLE panels turn dead space around the rear window into organized, reachable storage. If you drive a 4Runner, Land Cruiser, Lexus GX, Sequoia or similar SUV, here is how the MOLLE panels and accessories we carry from Van44 Overlanding Gear work, with real specs and answers to the questions we get asked most.
What is a MOLLE panel?
MOLLE is a grid of slots that lets you attach pouches, bags and mounts wherever you need them. On a vehicle, a MOLLE panel is a rigid plate with that grid, so recovery gear, tools, first aid and trail essentials stay secured and within reach instead of sliding around the cargo area.
What is the difference between interior and exterior panels?
Interior MOLLE systems mount on the inside of the rear window area. They keep gear dry and out of sight, and include a MOLLE grid for pouches and tools. Choose a driver side panel, a passenger side panel, a full set, or a full set plus a ceiling panel that mounts between both sides for overhead storage on supported vehicles.
Exterior organizer panels cover the outside of the rear window and are built for heavier, bulkier items. They have universal Rotopax mounting, so you can run single, double, sideways or side-by-side setups for fuel, water, recovery boards or trail gear. They are designed to work with most major roof rack systems.

How much weight can a MOLLE panel hold?
- Interior panels (6th gen 4Runner): 28 lb (13 kg) per panel; the panel weighs 4.5 lb, and the ceiling panel 6.5 lb.
- Exterior panels (6th gen 4Runner): 35 lb (16 kg) per panel; each panel weighs 9 lb.
- Trunk lid panel (3rd gen 4Runner): 20 lb (9 kg), depending on the strut.
Ratings can differ by model, so check the product page for your vehicle.
What are the panels made from?
The panels are 5052 aluminum, 1/8" thick, with a black textured powder coat on the interior panels and exterior panels. Aluminum does not rust, which matters with Canadian road salt. Hardware and installation instructions come in the box.
Do I need to drill to install them?
The interior systems for the 4Runner (5th and 6th gen), Land Cruiser LC250 and LC120 are described as drill-free, using factory mounting points. The exterior panels are direct bolt-on, and the hatch ladders are also drill-free. Always read your vehicle's listing for exact install details.
Do MOLLE panels block my rear visibility?
The interior panels are designed to expand storage without blocking visibility. The exterior panels cover the entire rear window to maximize storage while, per the maker, not sacrificing visibility. Check your own sightlines before heading out.

How much do MOLLE panels cost?
Interior systems start at $250 for a single side, with full sets from $465 and a full set plus ceiling panel at $820 on the 4Runner and Land Cruiser listings. Exterior panels start around $450 per side, with full sets from about $830 for most models. The Rivian R1S runs higher. Bundle pricing saves money over buying sides separately.
Should I buy one side or a full set?
One side is a good way to start. The full set gives you both sides of the cargo area, and bundles include a discount. If you run a roof tent or lots of recovery gear, the full set is where the system really pays off.
What about a hatch ladder?
A hatch ladder gives you a safe way up to your roof rack, roof tent or cargo box. The 6th gen 4Runner hatch ladder is 6061 aluminum with 304 stainless steel hardware, weighs 13 lb and is rated to 300 lb. It is drill-free. We also list ladders for the 5th gen 4Runner, 3rd gen 4Runner and 2nd gen Sequoia. Pair one with a roof rack and a rooftop tent.
What can I put on a MOLLE panel?
- Recovery gear: soft shackles, straps and gloves.
- Tools and a first aid kit.
- Pouches, such as the MOLLE Pouch Set, designed to be mounted vertically or overhead.
- On exterior panels: Rotopax fuel or water, and recovery boards.
