Rocky Mountain Tents makes four rooftop tent models: the Wolverine, Timberwolf, Owl's Nest and Grizzly Den. Choose the Wolverine for the lightest, most compact setup for one or two people. Choose the Timberwolf for a little more width. Choose the Owl's Nest or Grizzly Den when you're camping with family or need room for three to four people.

All four are 4-season rooftop tents built around a hard aluminum shell, with one-minute setup and built-in power. Three are full hard shell tents, while the Owl's Nest is a hybrid with a hard aluminum top and soft canvas sides. The real differences come down to size, weight, sleeping space and price. The Owl's Nest: A Hybrid Foldout for Families and Small Groups

The Owl's Nest is a lightweight hybrid foldout 4-season rooftop tent that sleeps three to four people. Instead of a full hard shell, it pairs a hard aluminum top with soft canvas sides. That hybrid construction gives it a noticeably larger interior than the wedge models while keeping it lightweight and easy to handle, with multiple windows and roof skylights and the largest sleeping area of the four at 91" × 63". It packs down to a compact 63" × 45" footprint, about 10 inches high.

How to Choose the Right Rocky Mountain Rooftop Tent

  1. How many people are sleeping up there? One or two: Wolverine. Two adults and a child: Timberwolf. Three to four: Owl's Nest or Grizzly Den.
  2. How much weight can your roof rack carry? Weight ranges from 115 to 172 lbs. Check your rack's dynamic load rating, not just the static rating. Our guide to choosing a proper roof rack explains the difference.
  3. Wedge or foldout? Wedge tents (Wolverine, Timberwolf) pack about 5 inches high, which is better for wind noise, fuel economy and low garages. Foldouts (Owl's Nest, Grizzly Den) pack about 10 inches high but give you a much bigger sleeping area.
  4. What's your vehicle's footprint? The wedge tents are 82 inches long when closed. The foldouts are shorter, at 63 and 75 inches.
  5. What's your budget? The range runs from $2,899.99 to $3,799.99. The Timberwolf and Owl's Nest are priced the same, so the choice between them comes down to wedge versus foldout and how many people are camping.
